Economy and transport
The basis of the development of Narvik is the Swedish iron ore from Kiruna and around the year fully ice-free port. Narvik is ultimate destination of the Ofot railway, whereon the iron ore from Kiruna is transported. Today more than 8000 people work in the economic sectors transport and trade, information technology, mechanical engineering and tourism.

A road connection to Kiruna (Nordkalottveien) exists only since 1984. Narvik belongs to the Hurtigruten ports. In the municipality the European routes E6 (Trelleborg-Malmö-Helsingborg-Göteborg-Oslo-Trondheim-Narvik-Kirkenes) and E10 cross (Å i Lofoten-Narvik-Kiruna, Töre [E4]). The next airport is the airport Evenes used by Harstad and Narvik in the neighbour municipality.
History
Narvik resulted by renaming of the formerly city of Victoriahavn in 1899. The Ofot railway over the Bjørnfjell had been dedicated in 1902. Narvik had been occupied by German forces. The reason was the safeguard of iron ore supplies to the German armaments industry. Due to following heavy fights Narvik was heavily destroyed.
